From Fossils to Fun: Enid Public Library’s Dino Show Sparks STEM Curiosity!
Enid, OK – 07/18/24 – The room roared with laughter as the Enid Public Library’s patrons enjoyed the Dino Show.
Mad Science OKC visited the library as part of its Elementary STEM summer program. With more than 100 patrons in attendance, participants began the day watching volunteers from Mad Science OKC put on an educational and hilarious show for the children.
Some lucky attendants had the opportunity to take part as they helped search for fossils and even dressed as dinosaurs themselves. The fun did not stop there as everyone was invited to check out Mad Science’s booths, where they got to witness and test out other experiments.
Aimed at encouraging children to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the library has put on multiple events over the summer.
From events involving LEGO builds, cardboard creations, electronics, instruments, and more the children’s librarian, Susan Shewey, says the STEM events have been a massive success.
“It brings a lot of people together in our community across a huge spectrum of very diverse people,” Shewey said, “These STEM events help kids learn to not be afraid, to try new things, to experiment, and to have something not work out the first time and then try again. Those are great skills to learn.”
The library provides these events free to the community and all materials needed are given out once they arrive. Bigger events such as the Dino Show are made possible with the help of a grant from Park Avenue Thrift.
“Park Avenue Thrift does an amazing job. The profits from their store go back into our community, and the library has been a very grateful recipient of the grant now for three years. We use that money for books and programs during our Summer Reading event,” Shewey said.
With summer winding down, the library plans to hold two more STEM events. A LEGO build will take place Wednesday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m.
