Enid Public Library To Host Preamble to Enid Symphony Orchestra’s Season Opening Event
The Enid Public Library is excited to present “Preamble to Rising Voices,” a special prelude event taking place on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the library. This event, held in partnership with the Enid Symphony Orchestra, will offer a preview of its upcoming concert, “Rising Voices: A Celebration of Women Composers,” which is scheduled for September 14, 2024.
Enid Symphony Executive Director Victoria Moreira will lead a discussion surrounding four pioneering women composers: Karen Walwyn, Lili Boulanger, Vítězslava Kaprálová, and Florence Price. The event will include listening examples to showcase the significance of their music and aims to provide a historical overview and analysis of their works.
“It is part of our mission to intentionally program artistic works that reflect the diversity of our constituent community,” Moreira said. “Programming works like these underrepresented yet extraordinarily gifted female artists is the first step to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of all in our unique, diverse culture. Classical music (or Art music, as I like to call it), is a sonic expression of the human experience and this cannot be portrayed without reflecting the voices of all in our community.”
Douglas Newell, Artistic Director of the Enid Symphony Orchestra, will share his insights into the creative process behind working with these compositions, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation for the Symphony’s season opener.
“When we were planning this year’s season, it was March 2024 and Women’s History Month. Douglas and I discussed about how artistic contributions of women (and underrepresented populations in general) should be celebrated year-round,” Moreira said when emphasizing the significance of this programming. “We called this concert “Rising Voices” because we seek to amplify the voices of these under-promoted yet extraordinarily gifted women.”
This preview event promises to be an enlightening experience, setting the stage for the Symphony’s season dedicated to celebrating the contributions of diverse voices in music.
