Chase the Chill Oklahoma: A Winter Service Project Opportunity
“Chase the Chill” combines art, charity, and yarn bombing. The mission is to celebrate the art and beauty of knitting and crocheting, building community, generating positive interest in a location, and sharing with others.
The Enid Public Library will kick off this winter’s service project “Chase the Chill Oklahoma” by offering free crochet instruction on Tuesday, November 22 from 1:00- 3:00. Participants will learn to crochet a hat or scarf which will be donated to the cause. We plan to have plenty of teachers and helpers on hand so all skill levels from beginner to expert can participate. This event, which takes place during Thanksgiving Break for Enid Public Schools, is for middle and high students through adults. The library also offers free knitting and crocheting lessons on the second Saturday of each month at 10:30. On December 21 from 3:00-6:00 the library will host a mitten workshop. Participants will machine sew mittens from fleece. This event will be for ages 14 – adult.
Handmade hats, scarves, and mittens will be collected through the fall and winter and then placed outside in public spaces when the weather turns bitter to be picked up by anyone who needs them. Donations of finished items, yarn, and polyester fleece may be brought to the library’s youth services or reference desks. Time spent working on this project will qualify for services hours towards academic requirements. For more information call Margo at 580-616-7183 or Gloria at 580-616-7182.
Chase the Chill Oklahoma is a coalition of stitchers who independently make scarves to yarn bomb (distribute) to public places so that those in need—regardless of income and without any qualifiers—can help themselves. More information may be found at http://www.facebook.com/chasethechilloklahoma.
