Join the Movement: Enid Public Library’s SAIL Program Helps Seniors Thrive

The Enid Public Library, in collaboration with the Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative, is proud to announce the ongoing success of its Stay Active and Independent for Life program, which has been enriching the lives of older adults since its launch in 2021.

Held every Wednesday and Friday at noon, SAIL offers a dynamic fitness, balance, and strength program for adults 65 and older. Many of the library’s participants share inspiring stories of improved health and quality of life.

“SAIL is a good workout. It’s gentle exercises but you do get a good workout and you build your stamina,” said Dorothy Weidner while praising the program’s effectiveness. Others like Joyce Brittan emphasize the benefits of the program as well as participating as a group. “It gets your heart to pumping better,” Brittan said, “[I]t is the fellowship that you have with other people also.”

SAIL’s positive impact extends beyond Enid. Tina Ruding, an education specialist with OHAI, shared touching stories from participants statewide. She says one participant was thrilled to dance with all his grandkids at his grandson’s wedding, a feat he attributed to his commitment to SAIL classes. Additionally, one dedicated participant experienced a significant transformation by losing 30 pounds, discontinuing diabetes medication, and feeling amazing.

The SAIL program is designed to accommodate all ability levels with seated and standing exercises, focusing on improving strength, balance, and mobility. It helps reduce the risk of falls and supports overall well-being while providing opportunities for social engagement and enjoyment.

Margo Holmes, the instructor for the SAIL classes at the Enid Public Library, shared her enthusiasm for the program after it was introduced at the library. “I loved it so much that I became a certified teacher myself,” Holmes said. “I’ve seen positive changes in my own health as well as in the students. Making your workout enjoyable is key to sticking with a program, and we do have fun!”

The Enid Public Library invites seniors to experience the benefits of the SAIL program. For more information on class schedules, registration, and program details, visit enid.okpls.org or contact the library at (580) 234-6313 or by email at publiclibrary@enid.org.
