Learn about Juneteenth at the library!
Juneteenth (June 19) is also known as Jubilee Day. In1865, General Gordon Granger brought word to Galveston, Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free. This came two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The freed persons of Texas organized a celebration of the holiday the following year, beginning the celebration of Juneteenth.
