Library Launches YouthAstroNet Program to Connect Students with Space Science
March 31, 2026
The library will launch an exciting new science program this spring, inviting local students to explore the wonders of the universe through YouthAstroNet, a national astronomy initiative designed for grades 5–9.
YouthAstroNet connects young learners with scientists and provides hands-on opportunities to investigate space. Participants will be able to request real images from remotely operated robotic telescopes, analyze astronomical data and explore fundamental questions about the universe, all while working toward their own final projects.
The library will host two five-week group sessions beginning in April. One group will meet Wednesdays starting April 22 at 1:30 p.m., while a second group will meet Saturdays starting April 25 at 1:30 p.m. Each session will last approximately 2.5 hours and will conclude with a final exhibition showcasing student discoveries. All materials and supplies will be provided.
Space is limited, and registration is encouraged. A QR code on program materials will direct participants to the registration form. Those needing assistance with registration may call the library at 580-234-6313.
Program coordinator Mark Ambriz said the program offers a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with real astronomical tools and data.
“Wondered how space worked? Want to use a telescope? In partnership with the Smithsonian and Harvard, we present YouthAstroNet,” Ambriz said. “We’ll be using special telescopes provided by Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. We’ll use the tool provided to us to create a special project at the end of the program to display at the library.”
