Crowns Tea Returns to the Enid Public Library

The Enid Public Library, in partnership with Thick Descriptions, is excited to announce the return of Crowns Tea, an elegant gathering celebrating Black culture, identity, and history through the art of storytelling. The event will take place Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at the Enid Public Library.

Inspired by “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats” by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, the event invites community members to come together for meaningful conversations on pressing social issues. Attendees are encouraged to wear their Sunday best, don a fancy hat, and bring their favorite cup and saucer to enjoy tea, food, and shared stories in a welcoming, refined atmosphere.

Thick Descriptions, an Oklahoma organization that aims to disrupt systems that prevent us from building community together, will use “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats”to facilitate discussions. The book features photos of Black women of all ages in their church hats, accompanied by personal stories that highlight the significance of the hat as a symbol of identity, tradition, and community.

Adults and supervised youth are welcome. To register, email hello@thickdescriptions.org or call 405-397-0584. For those interested in exploring the themes of the event, “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats” is available for checkout at the Enid Public Library.
