1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Exiting News!  We now have 18 graduates of children who have read 1000 or more books.  This program started just over a year ago and there are over 300 children who are striving to get their picture on the 1000 Books Hall of Fame Wall.

What is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten?  This is a program that is designed to encourage parents and children to read together. Reading to children before they enter school helps build vocabulary and language skills and creates a love of books and fond childhood memories.  Listening to books being read aloud helps prepare children with the ready to read skills they need for school.  In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build skills for future school and life success.   The program is self paced and families can complete it in their own time frame.  If you read 3 books a day, you will have read over 1000 books in just a year.  The program does not require that you read 1000 different books.  Parents may read the same book multiple times and record that book multiple times.  It is through rhyme and repetition that children learn the patterns of print.  Each time a parent and child complete 100 books, they return their sheet to the library and are given an incentive and a new recording sheet.

Join Gwen in achieving the goal of reading 1000 books!  Are you ready to get started?  Stop by the children’s desk and Ms. Karen can get you headed in the right direction.
